URSP Student Areej Ali Investigates the Cyber Pandemic due to COVID-19

As technology has grown ever more prevalent in our society, cyber security has become critical to the safety for all industries. I decided to pursue cyber security as my concentration of study and discovered that it can be applied to multiple fields, specifically the field of sciences/engineering. This digital security is necessary both to ensure the physical safety of society, by protecting sensitive information from unauthorized individuals, and also to ensure the safety and stability of the global population by preventing cyber-attacks upon businesses, organizations, or governments. My research will examine the cyber pandemic, which occurred due to the fact that COVID-19 shifted all activities to a virtual environment. The shift to the virtual environment caused a spike in the number of cyber-attacks that occurred.

This research project fits into my future plans because it allows me to pursue research in an interesting and unique topic. In the future, I am interested in pursuing research and applying to graduate school. This project will showcase my experience in both technical writing and robotics research. This project will be an accomplishment that I will be able to talk about to fellow researchers in the IT and engineering fields. An average research day for me is that I first start off by continuing my technical research on the major cyber-attacks that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a timeline, analyzing the events through case study analysis, and writing my reports. The technical part of my research project is to construct a robot in order to test it against security threats.

Some interesting new things that I have discovered this semester that when conducting a research project, you learn something new every day. I enjoyed learning new facts and methodology that have helped me to complete phases of my research. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to various changes for researchers and students. I have conducted research remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I have adapted to this change but now that restrictions are lifting, it seems that daily activities could resume to a new normal. I decided to work a new project this semester that was different from what I would have done because of the COVID-19 pandemic. My research project is analyzing the events that happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a cyber pandemic. My next steps are to finish constructing the robot, testing it and modifying it to be a final product.
